Moa Moa

Taking influence from artists including Unknown Mortal Orchestra, James Blake and Photay, moa moa came together in the summer of 2019 with the idea of pairing unconventional songwriting with pop-leaning sensibilities.

Assembling moa moa alongside friends Dan Byrne, Connor Foweraker, Sophie Parkes and Matt Taylor, songwriter and producer James Ratcliffe was intent upon being ever-changing, unpredictable and ambitious with his approach to moa moa’s music. The debut single, ‘Yellow Jacket’ was released in February 2020 to critical acclaim, with widespread support on UK radio from BBC Radio 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne, Amy Lamé, Shaun Keaveny, Tom Robinson, John Hillcock, and Radio 1’s Huw Stephens. UK tastemaker publications including DIY, Clash and The Most Radicalist also supported the release, in what was a bold first outing.

The follow up to their debut single, ‘Spinning’, is released via Square Leg Records: the UK indie label curated and championed by Brit and Mercury Award winning-producer (Alt-J, Wolf Alice, Maricka Hackman), Charlie Andrew. On the release, Andrew highlights, « I was instantly drawn to their blend of unusual phrasing, interesting production ideas, pop hooks and the way they perform. All these things resonate with me….it’s fresh, bold and exciting.”

In 2021 the band signs with the Speedy Wunderground label and releases ‘Coltan Candy’.
